I know I can’t change the past.

When I mess up, all I can do is apologize and try to do better.

I can be forgiven simply by asking for it.

Saying “sorry” isn’t easy.

Admitting your mistakes and how they have affected others takes humility and bravery.

But what happens when even your sincerest apology isn’t enough?

What do you do when you are looking into the eyes of someone you’ve deeply hurt, and you can’t fix what you’ve broken?

On your own, you cannot escape guilt and shame.
Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins.
Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin.
For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night.
Psalms 51:1-3

True forgiveness

Imagine spilling red dye on a white carpet. You can wipe it up, but no amount of scrubbing will remove the stain.

It is good and right to ask people we’ve hurt for forgiveness.

But even they aren’t able to completely remove our guilt.

There is only One who can cleanse us from a lifetime of accumulated sins.

To people who have made a mess of their lives, who have hurt others, who are haunted by mistakes, God’s Word says:

But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
1 Corinthians 6:11

Live unhaunted

God gives forgiveness to any who ask for it by calling on the name of Jesus Christ.
