It makes for beautiful songs and stories, and I can’t help wanting it...

But holding onto love is like trying to grab water.

Love seems to elude us when we most need it.
It is inconsistent, just like the people we go to for love.
Is it even possible to find a love that is true and stable?
The truth is… people are not stable, and they are not perfect, so it makes sense that their love is inconsistent and flawed.
But what if this statement is true?
“...God is love…”
1 John 4:8

A new definition

Here, in the Bible, we see that the very nature of God is love. It doesn’t get simpler or more intriguing than that.

The Bible also describes love as…
Patient and kind. Not jealous, proud, or rude. Not demanding its own way. Not irritable. Holding no grudges. (1 Corinthians 13:4-5)

“Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.”
(1 Corinthians 13:7)

Let’s be honest. This description of love is NOT something we often find in other people… or ourselves.

But who doesn’t want that kind of love?!

And there is someone who actually loves like that.

God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him.
This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.
1 John 4:9-10

The love you want

The amazing thing is that even if we deny its reality, God reaches out to us with his perfect love.

And even though our own love is flawed, when we receive God’s love, our hearts start to change and we can love more like him.
